The Coxes of Clarke Co, Alabama
John, Thomas and Matthew and probably Caleb Cox were in or through Clarke Co, AL in the early days, 1811 to 1820. They migrated through NC, SC and into GA where they were prior to 1810. Census and other records for all of them indicate John and Matthew were born in Virginia. About 1811 they moved on to Clarke Co, AL. Thomas died there in Feb 1821. John died there in 1842. Matthew moved on to Union Parish, LA where he was enumerated in 1850 born in VA. Caleb went on to Dale County, AL and his children to TN and AR.

Polly Cox married John Landrum 26 May 1818, the IGI says in Clarke Co, AL. This marriage is not listed in the Clarke Marriage index.

Sally Cox married Samuel Jeffus 29 Aug 1822, the IGI says in Clarke Co, Al.. This marriage also did not get in the Clarke Marriage index.

John Cox

John Cox was born, 19 Oct 1764 in Essex Co, VA. According to His Rev War Pension App He married Nancy Vasum according to one version of his family in the Ancestral File. There is a another record in the Ancestral File of John Cox who married Eve LNU with essentially the same children listed. Both are evidently the same John Cox but different researchers have developed some different info on them. He served in the Revolutionary War from Essex Co, VA. Moved to Pendleton Dist SC where he lived 18 yrs, then to GA where he lived in Franklin Co for some years and then to Clarke Co. Alabama. He married Nancy 6 Nov 1786 and she died 9 Oct 1848. The Bible pages noted below contain the following information about Nancy: "Nancy Cox was born 6th day of March A.D. 1780. And was married November the 6th day A.D. 1786."

An obituary hand written, reads as follows:.(1)

"Another of the Revolution's Patriots gone. Died at his plantation in Clarke County, Ala. on the 25th of September, of hydrothorox [?], John Cox, in 78th year. By his death his family, friends and acquaintances lost one of the remnants of the patriarchs of '76; one of those whose industrious, straight, honest lives presents them as the unheeded modern Noahs. Mr. Cox, born on the 19th October, 1764, in Efsex County, Virginia. He served in the army of the Revolution and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis. He moved to this state in 1811, and shared with a numerous family all the privations and dangers of our then Indian Wars. He trained up his numerous children to habits of honest[?] industry, neglecting perhaps too much their literary education, preferring to train them up to be industrious ploughmen than professional ....[?]. He lived to see his progeny of 12 children, 72 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren to whom he left a character worthy of being imitated.

Thomas was living with Sarah in 1850 census which says that he was born in GA. This tells us that sometime between Apr 1788 when Mary was born and Jun 1792, John Cox moved to GA from SC.

Wonder where he was in 1790? GA? or SC? Thomas died in 1852. Estate settled 6 Nov 1853 Book G page 970, Clarke Co, Probate. His Children by first wife were:(6)

Obadiah Cox born ca 1824, single in 1850.
James Cox born ca 1828, single in 1850.

Mary Cox born ca 1831, single in 1850.

Rebecca Cox was born 3 Sep 1794 and married Josiah Brunson. She died 20 Oct 1836 so we do not have a location for her birth. Her son James indicated in the 1880 and 1900 censuses that he did not know where she was born.

His obituary was carried in the Clarke County Democrat on 21 Feb 1861
Died at his residence on Tallahatta, 31st Jan Ult., Mathew Cox in the 59th year of his age. He came to this country with his father, John Cox in 1811, & settled a few miles east of Coffeeville, where he resided until about a year previous to his death. He joined the Methodist Church when he was about 30 years old-and during a membership of so many years he conducted himself in an exemplary manner & maintained the character of a devoted Christian. About 20 years ago he was seized with asthma, which finally carried him to his long home. He bore his long and painful illness with Christian fortitude, & died in the hope of a glorious immortality. The writer of this knew him well. He was kind in all the relations of life - an affectionate husband, and indulgent father, a charitable neighbor, a good master. He lived respected & died regretted by all.

A memorial of respect was carried in the Clarke County Democrat on 28 Feb 1861

Memorial of respect. Whereas it has been the dispensation of an all wise Creator to bereave us of our worthy & much beloved brother, Matthew Cox. Therefor, be it Resolved, that we, the members of Coffeeville Lodge, #122, of which brother Cox was a faithful & upright member, feel ourselves sorely bereaved by his untimely death. We greatly sympathize with the bereaved family of our deceased brother; as the wife has lost a devoted husband & the children an affectionate father. Sunday 24th March shall be the day set apart by this Lodge to pay our last respects to the remains of our deceased brother. J J McConnell, F G Christmas, G B Malone, Committee.

Their children from the 1850 census were:

Nancy E Cox was born 4 Jun 1834 in Clarke Co. There is a record in the Ancestral file that says she married FNU Mc Naughton, 7 Dec 1839.
