Francis Stockman Family - An English Stockman Family
Francis Stockman was born in March 1788 in Yorkshire, England. His full name was probably Francis Asbury Stockman for the headstone of his wife says, “Wife of Francis A Stockman, Senior”. He emigrated to the United States prior to 1821 when he married Sarah Ann Kelly in Kentucky. Sarah Ann Kelly was born 6 Feb 1797 in Montgomery County, KY. Sometime between 1832 and 1838 the family moved to Putnam Co, IN and they were living there in 1850 when they were enumerated in the census.

Family tradition says that Francis was one of six brothers who were over six feet tall, all members of the King's Guard. It is not known why he came to the USA. He was a shoemaker by trade in Kentucky and being a Abolitionist suffered persecution because of his beliefs and for teaching Negroes in his shop. He moved his family to Putnam County, IN about 1836 and while clearing land was injured by a falling tree which resulted in his being a cripple the rest of his life. Sometime after 1853, Francis and Sally went to MO. with sons Frank Stockman and John Stockman and settled in Mercer County, MO.
In the 1860 census we find Sarah Ann Stockman listed as the head of the household, therefore we assume that sometime between 1854 and 1860 Francis Stockman died. In 1860 Sarah Ann is living in Mercer County, MO. Note that dollar amounts in Occupation show value of real estate and personal possessions.

The Children of Francis Stockman and Sarah Ann Kelly were:
1. Jane Bethena Stockman b 4 Jan 1827, Bourbon Co, KY, d 11 Jan 1884 Putnam Co, IN. She m Isaac Sylvester Perry 20 Dec 1853 in Putnam, IN and they had 7 children. At the time of her death her husband wrote the following eulogy for his wife:
Jane Bethena wife of Isaac S. Perry came to Indiana and Putnamville at the age of 10 years old. They moved then to a farm about 3 miles from Cloverdale IN. When very young Jane was seized with a desire and determination to have an education and in spite of all the hardships of life and want of school privileges at that time she was qualified to teach at the age of sixteen. Her first school was taught at Mt. Zion near Cloverdale on the farm now owned by G.W. McCoy. This vocation she followed in country schools until some five or six years before the adoption of our present school system. The citizens of Cloverdale and vicintiy determined to have a school of high grade and procured the services of Mr. Braz, a graduate of Indiana State University as Principal and Jane as Assistant Student and Principal until she was married. She was a Popular and Successful teacher. When Her children began to grow up around her all her zeal and enthusiasm in teaching came back with renewed energy and found vent in teaching her children and in them laid the foundation of an education equal to, if not superior to most of our Common Schools. (Written by Isaac S. Perry at the time of her death.)(Copied from the original paper by Viola M.V. Richards grandaughter of Jane and Isaac Perry.)

Lillie Thompson.
She
married Bobby Gene Cox 11 Oct 1958. Loretta and her family lived in
Greenwood, South Carolina.
Loretta
and her sister Penny Sansbury attended the Stockman Family Reunion in
Silver City in
2002 and were a grand addition to the gathering. Penny tells us about
Loretta’s indomitable spirit.
"She had survived breast cancer, a heart
attack, and heart failure with resulting multiple surgeries in
June.
She visited me in Florence (about 168 miles from Greenwood, SC) on
Saturday, November 15
and was d
oing fine. She had regained her vitality and the pallor that followed
the surgery had faded.
Then on Tuesday,
she fell leaving a doctor's appointment at the hospital. She drove
home, and even
though she had a few
crapes, she thought she was fine. Then she developed a headache and her
husband Bobby took her to the
ER. Both expected her to be given something for pain and then sent
home. After tests, she was taken into neurosurgery around 9:00 because
of a ruptured blood
vessel on her brain.. The doctor gave little hope for her surviving the
surgery because her heart was
still
weak. Once again, she surprised everyone by coming through the surgery
and having stable vital
signs. She
did really well until Friday afternoon, November 21. She died around
1:30 p.m.

It was reported in Volume 1 Number 1 of The Stockman Family Newsletter an article about the family of Peter Stockman, son of Frederick Stockman and Katherine Disponet. A grievous error occurred in that report and this error has been copied and "Paul Reveared" around the web, on many web pages, most often without giving credit (or blame!) To The Stockman Family Newsletter for where the information was derived. Let us correct it here and hope that the "Authors" of those web pages will pick up the correction.
Here is the original article from the Newsletter. It was written in March 1986 on an old Apple 2e, using Appleworks and the formatting was rather primitive. Reading this article shows us how far the Newsletter has come in almost 18 years. Correction of the error follows this reprint.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS FREDERICK STOCKMAN
Lum Stockman as he was known, appears to have been named after his grandfather, who first brought the Stockman family to Texas. When his parents moved west Lum came with them and in the area around Mc lennan and Hill Counties he met and fell in love with Laura, daughter of his cousin, Hardy Stockman. They were married and raised a family in that area. In 1879 Laura died, probably in childbirth. Their children were:
NAME DOB DOD
William 1864
George 1866
Jane 1875
Susan 1877
Laura 1879
Laura is buried in the Pitts Cemetery outside Mt. Calm, Texas. Her head stone reads "LAURA N. STOCKMAN WIFE OF C.F. STOCKMAN 20 FEB 1851 11 SEP 1879". A George Stockman was reported to have died "recently" in the Mt. Calm area, but no other of their children are known. In January of 1881 Lum was in Blanco County
and transacted a deed for Laura's share of her deceased father's estate. SEE STORY OF PITTS CEMETERY IN NEXT ISSUE.
SUSAN STOCKMAN
Susan Stockman was born ca 1857. She married William Davis in 1869 but died in 1872. No children are known.
MARY H STOCKMAN
Mary H Stockman was born ca 1859. Following the death of her sister, Susan Mary H married William Davis. Children are not known.
ELIZABETH STOCKMAN
Elizabeth Stockman was born in ca 1859. She is buried in the Harper Cemetery (Where??). No marriage is known.
HENRY STOCKMAN
There is, buried, in the Pitts Cemetery in Limestone County, Texas a young man, Henry Stockman who's tombstone reads "Henry, son of Elizabeth 15 Dec 1861 to 12 Nov 1877". His place in the family is not known for sure but the only Elizabeth in the area at that time was the widow of Peter, Elizabeth Carr Stockman and it is believed that this Peter is probably their last son. -//-
In reading this article we can spot several different errors all of which have been corrected in past issues of the Newsletter.
These will be quickly reviewed first:
1. Peter married Elizabeth Caro not Carr. One descendant changed the name to Carr but most of the family continued to use the Caro surname.
2. Christopher Columbus Frederick Stockman and Laura N Stockman did not have any sons. The two boys George and William were nephews of CCF. The three girls are children of CCF and Laura.
We have learned a great deal more about this family since this article was written, but one major error that was reported there has never been corrected and this has to do with the family of William Davis who married two of the daughters of Peter Stockman and Elizabeth Caro and who these two daughters were. So let us get to this newly discovered error that needs correcting and while we are at it discuss some additional information on the family of William Davis. As reported in the original article, William Davis married Susan Stockman. She died prior to 1872 and William Davis, whose full name was William Martin Davis, married a “ Miss M Stockman” according to the marriage license.
Brenda Woodall who is descended from William Martin Davis and his second wife provided this information which includes the Family Bible record. The Miss M Stockman, second wife of William Martin Davis was believed to be Mary H Stockman by Flo Mitchell who did the original research on this family. Flo, one of the grand Ladies of Stockman Family Research, began the research on her branch of the Stockman family in the 1970's when research was not a matter of searching indices or checking what others had already discovered. In those days it was a matter of digging through records one faded page at a time.
The new information shows us that William Martin Davis did not marry Mary H Stockman, but her younger sister, Melvina Stockman, who had not even been identified as a daughter of Peter Stockman when the original article in Vol. 1 No. 1 of the Newsletter was written. At that time the 1870 census listing for Elizabeth Stockman, widow of Peter Stockman had not yet been found. That census reads as follows:

William Davis married Miss Susan Stockman in McLennan County, license issued 7 April 1869 by M R Holladay County Court Clerk and the marriage took place on the same day performed by B F Harris, JP. This marriage is recorded on page 119 of the marriage records of McLennan County on 29 April 1869 and was coutersigned by M R Holladay Twice! Susan died sometime after this census was taken in the summer of 1870 and William Davis married for a second time to Miss M Stockman. The license was issued 19 Nov 1872 and the marriage performed 21 Nov 1872 by R A Dyer, JP. It is recorded in Book A Page 11 of the Marriage Records of McLennan County.
In the 1880 census William Davis was enumerated by his middle name Martin.

Melvina, the daughter of Peter Stockman and Elizabeth Caro was born in 1852 and an age of 27 yrs in the summer of 1880 when this census was taken is well within the expected bounds. Other children that are known for Melvina and William Martin Davis were Matthew Davis, Elizabeth Davis and Daisy Davis.
This information leaves us wondering what happened to Mary H Stockman, the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth who we initially thought had married William Davis. Inspection of the 1870 census of the household of mother, Elizabeth recorded above, tells us that she was not living with her mother in 1870.
McLennan County marriage records tell us that on 30 Nov 1869 a Mr. Vandra McVee obtained a license to marry Miss H Stockman. The marriage occurred on 2 Dec of that year performed by Harvey Carroll, Minister of the Gospel. This is the last record that can be found for Vandra McVee or his wife. They are not enumerated in the 1870 census. A search of that census reveals that Harry Carroll whose occupations is listed as “Minister of the Gospel” was living in the area “East of the Brazos River” and he is surely the Minister recorded in McLennan County records as Harvey Carroll who performed the marriage.
In Gonzales County, Texas in 1870 there are numerous families with the surname of McVea but no one with a first name of Vandra and no surname of McVee can be found. -//-
Stockmans in 1790 Census of the United States
The 1790 census of the United States was the first census taken for the new Republic as required by the recently adopted constitution. There are no records available for Virginia or Georgia as these were destroyed when the British burned Washington during the War of 1812. Records for the other states have been indexed by several different organizations and companies over the years.
The purpose of the census was to determine representation of the various states in the House of Representatives and this first census collected only a minimal amount of information. The name of the Head of the Household was recorded followed by the number of Males 16 yrs of age or older, then the number of males under 16 years of age, the number of females, and last others, which included salves.
Searches were made for Stockman, Stockmann, Stuckman, and Steckman while compiling these records. Were known the persons enumerated are identified.

Charles And Eleanor Simonds made the reunions at which they were present a little brighter for all who attended. Granddaughter Sheri said in an e-mail that her grandfather said, "I'm ready to go home and I don't mean Leslie Drive" - and he wouldn't eat anything but ice for his remaining time. He saw everyone, though, and was truly at peace.”
<>Loretta Cox> Loretta and her sister Penny were part of the reunion for a few days in July 2002. In a strange part of the country, into a home filled with total strangers they walked, and before the evening was done they were family. We were immediately struck by Loretta’s great sense of humor. Let us keep Penny and the family in our prayers.
<>Reunion 2004> Most of us would never have known Loretta or Charles had it not been for the Stockman Family Reunions nor would we have a special place in our heart for Penny and Eleanor and know the loss they must feel.
Reunions may require us to travel great distances, immerse ourselves in a strange environment and disrupt our daily routines no end, but do we not mature in our understanding and enjoyment of this great family. Reunion 2004 will convene in Silver City 16, 17 and 18 July. Make it one of your 2004 priorities to attend. Strangers - family and friends that has not attended in the past - welcome! How you will grow from the experience is something you will only know after you have been here and regret that the reunion has concluded.
