Thomas P Stockman of Jones Prairie, TX

Among the lost sheep of the Stockman family reported in the last issue of the Newsletter was Thomas P Stockman. Thomas first came to our attention in December 1986 when the third issue of the Stockman Family Newsletter reported that Flo Mitchell, a grand lady and wonderful family researcher, sent a note with some headstone inscriptions she had found in the Sneed Cemetery, Milam Co, TX. The question she asked was , “Who was this Thomas P Stockman. At long last, with the help of Patsy Seay, Judkins family researcher the question can be answered.

The story begin in 1850 in Perry Co, AL where widower John George Stockman was living with his family in the Old Town Beat. He was enumerated that year and his census record looks like this.

George’s full name was John George Stockman according to Perry County Alabama Deed book K, Pages 683-4, 9 Nov 1852, when he sold land. To make the research even more difficult, not only Is the son, John named John George, but living a few houses away is another John George Stockman age 67 yrs in 1850. With three John George Stockmans in the same county it became a bit confusing when it was discovered that a John G Stockman, m Mary Judkins 11 Feb 1852 in Perry Co. Was this George the father, or John the son or John George the neighbor?

Barbara Carter, in the census quoted above is John George’s daughter who married Daniel Carter 24 Dec 1832 in Perry County.

A search of the 1850 census reveals a Ustitia Judkins age 80 yrs and his wife Harriet living in Perry County. In the Household is a daughter Mary age 21 yrs.

The 1860 census helped answer some of our questions about John George Stockman and Mary Judkins.

From his age in this census we see that John George the Father was the one of married Mary Judkins.

Barbara Carter is living next door at HH 568 with her son George.

The Civil War comes and goes and mystery surrounds this family. We leave Alabama and our next stop is in Milam Co., Texas in 1880 where we find in the census Mary Stockman and her son Thomas.

Patsy Seay provides us with information about Victoria Judkins. She is Victoria Monroe, the widow of Uriah Hugh Judkins, who was born about 1836 in Perry County Alabama, a brother of Mary Judkins who married John George Stockman. Hugh was married first to Eugenia LNU. He married second to Victoria A. Monroe in Milam County Texas. They had the two sons enumerated in the Census.

      Milam County, TX marriage records were destroyed so the exact date of the marriage of Thomas Stockman and Victoria Judkins is not known, but their son, Arthur Stockman was born in January 1884. They had two additional children, Minnie Ada Stockman, born 1889 and died 1890 and Maria Stockman who probably was born and died on 1 Jul 1902. Both little girls are buried in the Sneed Cemetery.;

Thomas Stockman died in 1902 and is buried in the Sneed Cemetery, near Jones Prairie, TX. His headstone reads: Thomas P Stockman 1852-1902.

Victoria continued to live with her children and in 1910 she is enumerated with her son, Arthur Stockman in Milam Co, TX. Arthur is age 24 yrs and Victoria is listed as his mother age 60 yrs born in Louisiana. In the 1920 census this family has not been located. Victoria died in 1932 and is buried next to her husband. Her headstone reads: Victoria A Stockman 1850-1932. Arthur T Stockman never married he lived in the Jones Prairie area until his death. He is buried in the Sneed Cemetery and his headstone reads: Arthur T Stockman 1883-1943.-lts-

The Stockmans of Jackson and Ross Counties, Ohio

The beginning of the Story of the Ross and Jackson County, Ohio Stockmans is lost in pre Revolutionary War New Jersey. The story still has many gaps, but it is now possible to begin to fill in some of the blanks.

William Stockman enlisted in the New Jersey Line in that part of Essex County that became Orange County New Jersey. He married Nancy Lindsley 8 Oct 1777 and died 11 Mar 1837. His widow applied for pension 11 July 1837 at Clinton, in Essex County, NJ aged 77 years. Phoebe Lindsley age 81 made an affidavit at Orange, NM stating that she was at the wedding of Nancy Lindsley and William Stockman, but her relationship to them was not recorded.

Proof of all of the children of William and Nancy has not been found, however, it is know that one of them was named Moses for in the 1840 Pension List, Nancy Stockman age 81 yrs was living with Moses Stockman in Essex Co., NJ. It is probable that he was a son. In early tax rolls of Essex Co, NJ William Stockman is frequently listed and in the same tax rolls a William Stockman, Jr is also listed. Census Records for New Jersey no longer exist for the years 1790, 1800 1810, and 1820.

In 1830 Abiathar Stockman, Caroline Stockman, and Moses Stockman were enumerated in Essex Co, NJ. Where had William Junior Gone? In 1830 a William Stockman, which subsequent census records tell us was born in New Jersey was living in Ross County, OH.

In 1840 Abiathar who was living in Essex Co, NJ in 1830 had moved to Delaware County, Ohio and William Stockman had moved to Lick Township, Jackson County, OH. Moses Stockman was still living in Essex County, NJ.

In 1850 Abiathar had moved to Ashland Co, Ohio where he was enumerated.

Is William Stockman age 64 yrs in this household the William Stockman Jr, in the early Tax list or is the William Stockman living in Jackson County, OH, or are neither of them? Regardless, in 1850 the William Stockman who moved to OH prior to 1830 is recorded in Jackson County,

A peculiarity of the 1850 census of Jackson County, Ohio is that the census taker recorded the inhabitants and at a later time in another hand many of the married women’s maiden names were inserted. When first encountered, considerable confusion can result.

William Stockman had a daughter named Drusilla who married Robert Springer. They were living in Jackson County in 1850.

At least one son of this couple, Alanson Springer, born ca 1813 was living near them in Jackson County.

Several other Stockmans, very probably children of William Stockman were also in Ross or Jackson Counties. Charles Stockman who married Hannah Springer 20 Aug 1837 in Jackson Co. was living in Ross County in 1850. It has not yet been determined how these two fit into these families, but considering the Stockman and Springer surnames a connection is apparent. Charles was enumerated in the 1850 census or Ross County, Ohio.

Robert Darling

Associated with this Stockman family in Ross and Jackson County Ohio is Robert Darling who married Lydia Stockman. They were married 23 May 1846 by Daniel Clark minister of the gospel.

Following the outbreak of the Civil war Robert Darling enlisted in Co. F. the 53rd regiment Ohio infantry on February 28,1862. He was involved in the battle of Shiloh, was present on 28 April 1862 but was left sick at Shiloh, TN. His unit moved on in August and he was sent to Ohio from Pittsburgh Landing by medical authority. Family members believe that Robert thought he had been discharged and therefore did not report for duty upon recovering his health. In August of 1863 a reward for the arrest of Robert was offered for his being AWOL.

Records indicate that he had been furloughed at Shiloh, Tennessee in April 1862 but had not reported back for duty. A reward for his arrest was set at $10. However, Robert was able to correct this misunderstanding by volunteering for another enlistment in United States Army. This enlistment occurred in the town of Scott’sborough, Alabama on the first day of January 1864 for a period of three years. The enlistment papers were signed by Robert’s Mark. Robert died at the garrison hospital Marietta, Georgia 23 August 1864.

Robert’s widow Lydia applied for a pension based upon Roberts service record and the fact that she and Robert had four children under the age of 16 years at the time of his death. She later remarried and the family moved to Michigan.

The information in this article was provided by Robert Eckert who is descended from Robert Darling and Lydia Stockman-//-

Kay Mains Comments about Earl Stockman

Here are the details of my Dad (Brennon Stockman) and Earl "finding" one another after 40 years of separation. Earl was the son of my grandfather (Brennan Bill) and his first wife, who died in childbirth. He was raised by his maternal grandparents.

Brennan Bill married my grandmother, Myrtle, and had two children, Bertie and my Dad. Myrtle had been married before, having several children. Her husband died, she moved to Texas. She and Brennan Bill separated, and both remarried. Bill had two more children by his third wife, Vivian, mentioned above, was one, then divorced again and married Minnie, whom we met. Myrtle married again, but had no more children.

Through all this, Dad had lost touch with Earl. When I first began researching, I located Brennan Bill's last wife, Minnie, in Brownwood. When I talked with her the first time, I found out that Earl was living in California, and got his address and phone number. Dad wouldn't call him, but wrote him a letter, identifying himself. As soon as he received the letter, Earl was ecstatic. He called and they, set up a reunion in California, and have been seeing each other ever since. Earl moved from California to Oklahoma a number of years ago. It was an exciting            time for them.-//-

Elizabeth Stockman of Perry Co, Alabama

Elizabeth Stockman was born ca 1820 in Alabama. She married Robert Lewis Huey Colburn who was born in 1823 in Perry Co, AL 23 July 1842, License Number 1381. Their children were:

Malinda Catherine Colburn born ca 1843 in Alabama

Mary Jane Colburn born ca 1845 in Alabama

George Guillard Colburn born ca 1848 in Alabama

John Colburn born ca 1849 in Alabama

Felissa Colburn born ca 1852 in Alabama

Robert Lysander Colburn born 5 Jul 1857 in Alabama. He served in the 40 th Infantry Regiment, Co H, Confederate, in the Civil War.

Nancy Colburn born ca 1859 in Alabama

            Caroline Colubrn born ca 1860

There were two Stockman families in Perry Co, AL and Elizabeth Stockman could be a member of either of these families. George Stockman born ca 1787 in South Carolina and John G Stockman born ca 1783 in South Carolina. Both of these men bore the name John George Stockman and it is sometimes difficult to sort the records which deal with one from the other. See the story above on Thomas P Stockman for more on these families.. In 1850 they were living side by side in the Old Town Beat in Perry County. It is inter to note that Polly Carter, born ca 1838, married Reas Colburn in 1856. Which of these two families does Elizabeth belong to?-lts-

Frederick Stockman in Orcoquisac, TX in 1807

This information was found in the Louisiana Genealogical Register, Volume XXIX, #1, March 1982 published by the Louisiana Genealogical and Historical Society. Elizabeth Shown Mills translated this record which is the Bexar Archives, Reel 37, Frames 161-63, University of Texas, Austin, Texas. The article is entitled “1807 Settlers of Lake Charles, Louisiana” but this location was actually in Texas not in Louisiana. The names in ( ) are Mills’ translation of the surnames. Frederick is enumerated as Federico Escoman. Charles Sallier who is enumerated as Don Carlos Saliet was the founder of Lake Charles Louisiana according to Mills.
